A Beacon School Share New Track, Announce ‘Cola’ Vinyl Reissue

Stream “Glue,” a previously unreleased cut from the Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Patrick Smith’s debut album, Cola.

It’s been about a year since the Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Patrick Smith released his dreamy debut solo album, Cola (Grind Select), under the moniker A Beacon School. The album will be re-released on vinyl this June via House Arrest/Fat Possum, along with three previously unreleased cuts: “Glue,” “Fade In Nylon,” and “Cut Thru.”

Like the rest of the fare on Cola, “Glue” is a catchy electro pop tune that combines lush, chirping synth with fuzzy guitar. Smith’s vocals are warm and hazy, and his lyrics feel as ephemeral as the song itself (“You untie / a yellow lace / Your sweatshirt / around my waist”). At just over two minutes long, the track is a gliding, beachy vignette—bright and immersive.

“I was initially trying to write a song that sounded like my friend Jon’s band, BLUFFING,” Smith told AdHoc in an email. “All their songs were insanely catchy and less than two minutes long. As soon as I got going though, I veered off in a completely different direction, ending up with the weird sound collage that closes the song. The maximalist approach on this one is very much in line with the feel of the album so I’m glad it’s finally seeing the light of day.”

Stream “Glue” below, and catch A Beacon School at Baby’s All Right on June 14.
