If you remember Memphis hip-hop's mid-'90s heyday where worn cassettes would lounge next to an ashtray piled to the top with roaches, you hopefully didn't miss out on this year's Mista Thug Isolation from Lil Ugly Mane. The production on that record sounds like nothing else; noise and electro combine with trap music to lay the foundation for lyrical fire that see-saws between humor and terror. Coming off a string of collaborations with Denzel Curry and DJ Dog Dick, Ugly Mane reached out to up-and-comer Antwon, a guy who, in his own words, started MCing "when my boy was the only person I knew our age DJing and he had a karaoke machine. We used to record freestyles, cut, and then do other shit like prank calls." In that spirit, now we have "Underwater Tank," a new collab between Ugly Mane and Antwon who illustrate the act of having sex through the metaphor of-- what else-- an underwater tank. Riding on top of a half-step beat, with production by Shawn Kemp, Antwon and Mane take turns spitting double-time. Even if the title suggests this whole thing is a joke, it's not. Or maybe it is...who cares?
Antwon's forthcoming full-length, End of Earth, drops at the end of the month. Lil' Ugly Mane's Mista Thug Isolation is out now on his bandcamp and will be released on vinyl through Hundebiss. There's no confirmed release from the two as a duo.
