Zulus: "Kisses"
"Kisses"-- actually, all of Brooklyn-based post-punk band Zulus' self-titled full length-- captures the ears immediately, combining the sound of The Killing Joke and Wolf Eyes' Dread. The opening vocals sound like the undead in a vaccum before the band comes in and throws down with pummeling forward momentum, masking their assault with reverb but keeping the drums relentlessly forward in the mix. Zulus has been playing and dropping releases steadily for a while now, the various members building off of seven years of work in bands like NYC's Fiasco and San Francisco bands Battleship and Prsms. "Kisses" may be their most accessible tune to date, but they haven't lessened their ability to impact.
Zulus is out now on Aagoo Records.
