Brian Miller has been talking about rRope to me and anyone who will listen for over a decade. When I first met the Deathbomb Arc label-runner and member of Foot Village and Rose for Bohdan (R.I.P), I was an impressionable undergraduate in Los Angeles hungry to uncover new music. Napster had just appeared on the scene and word-of-mouth was still the best method to educate oneself about obscure groups. Miller was positively evangelical in his assessment of rRope, providing a breathless and detailed description of a 1998 one-off gig opening for Sonic Youth in San Francisco. rRope was part of a fertile underground California experimental punk scene that, with a few exceptions, is lost to time, having missed the ballot for inclusion into the Underground Music Bible of Received Wisdom.
Today, however, a crucial chapter in that history is going to be filled in with the release of rRope's complete discography on 3xLP and digital. Everything released by the band is included here, along with previously unheard live tracks from the Sonic Youth gig, the band's last. rRope covered an impressively eclectic amount of musical ground given their short lifespan and relatively small recorded output. Listening to all 31 tracks on this collection provides compelling evidence that, in the contemporary tumbl-and-forget arena of knee-jerk music discovery there remains a wealth of music, old and new, out there waiting to be re-discovered, re-assessed, and heard again for the very first time.
rRope's We Are You There complete discography is now available on triple-LP (limited to 300 copies) and digital download through Deathbomb Arc. Stream the whole thing below.
