Plvs Vltra: "Flower to Bees"
John Cage's once asked, "What's more musical, a truck passing by a factory or a truck passing by a music school?" The John Elliott-masterminded Editions Mégo imprint Spectrum Spools would probably answer "fuck musical!" That's precisely what makes Plvs Vltra's "Flower to Bees" so weird-- Toko Yasuda doesn't offer horrifying noise, neo-komische, or acid-charred techno, but pop, complete with discernable lyrics, structure, and instrumentation. Mind you, very in-your-face pop-- drums in the red, more electronic sounds than you can shake a stick at, and collaged bursts of guitar stabs and back-up vocals. Considering that Yasuda's day job is as touring synthesist in St. Vincent, "Flower to Bees" is plenty weird no matter how much fun these self-proclaimed "Summer jams" are. It's just fun and weird that it's this kind of fun and weird
Plvs Vltra's Parthenon is out June 19 on Spectrum Spools.
