See the World Through the Eye of a Sparrow in This Chuck Johnson Video

The abstract video perfectly complements Johnson’s mesmerizing guitar.

Chuck Johnson is a Bay Area-based guitarist who has built up an impressive body of solo work over the last decade, moving from one quality label to the next: Three Lobed, Scissor Tail, Trouble In Mind. Refining and re-defining his approach to the guitar with each subsequent release culminated in last year’s Basalms. Showcasing Johnson’s mastery of the pedal steel, the record is a sustained work of soothing deep listening.

On the occasion of a few rare solo dates on the West Coast (most opening for Grails), artist Allison Leigh Holt has produced a video for the track “Eye on the Sparrow.” The abstract close-ups of sculptural lens anomalies, filtered light, and liquid are the perfect complement to Johnson’s equally meticulous work. Johnson recently commanded a hometown crowd during a set at the Hemlock Tavern, and his continually evolving live setup is not to be missed. Basalams is out now on vinyl and CD from VDSQ. Catch him in New York with Bill Orcutt on April 12, or at one of the West Coast tour dates below.
